Swimming Match report- Oundle v Uppingham v Oakham

On 3rd of March 2022, we welcomed Oakham Swim Team as well as the Uppingham U18 boys for what turned out to be a really competitive gala. Sadly, we were not able to come out on top against both schools- although we beat Oakham soundly 258-192, we were unfortunately unable to do the same against Uppingham, losing 54-61.

The team impressed yet again, delivering another fine performance. 34 personal bests were achieved, and 8 school records were broken- no mean feat given just how many have been broken in the past month alone! A massive well done to Chuan Lim (F U6, U18 50m Butterfly), Alex Menshutkin (Sc 3, U16 50m Butterfly, U16,18 50 Backstroke) and Julian Lee (C 5, U16,18 50m Breastroke, U16,18 100m Individual Medley) in particular for securing these school records. Your hard work does not go unnoticed.

I would be doing the U16 boys a major injustice if I failed to mention them in this match report in particular- they not only bagged a school record in the U16 4x50 Freestyle relay (Mathis Combalot StA 5, Kan Payungwateseth S 4, Julian Lee C 5, Alex Menshutkin Sc 3), but beat their equivalents in Oakham soundly 77-42. I was also pleasantly surprised to find out that 90% of their times were faster than that of the Uppingham U18 boys- truly impressive! If only I’d snuck a few of them onto our events. A special mention also to the U16 girls, who managed to achieve a new school record in the U16 4x50 Freestyle relay (Chelsie Chen D 5, Nwando Ifeacho W 3, Doireann Hockel L 5, Ava Brammer L 5).

It seems it’s only taken me a week to eat my words about our winning streak- we did, sadly, lose to Uppingham. Either way, it’s hard not to be pleased with such a stunning set of results- I’m truly proud of how far the team has come. It’s a privilege to count myself among them.
