1st XI Hockey Vs Bromsgrove - Match Report

The team set out to Bromsgrove at 11:45 on Saturday, ready for what we knew would be a difficult game. The long bus journey put us in a tired mood, but that didn't stop us for getting straight out on to the pitch and performing a short but effective warm up.

After some inspirational words from our coaches and captain Tommy Simeons (U6 St A), the whistle blew to start at around 2:00 and right from the get go we knew it would be a tough game. Bromsgrove came out fighting and within five or ten minutes they had played very nice, but lucky move, and with that they were 1-0 up. The rest of the first half was tough, with some very dirty playing from the bromsgrove players, probably confusing hockey with rugby, and some excellent saves from our keeper Robert Tombs (5 Sc) but we got to the second half with lots to prove to ourselves and to them. We came out fighting, even harder than we had been in the first half. We had put the pressure on again immediately from the start and had won ourselves a short corner 15 minutes into the second half. Our first goal came from this as Michael Ainger (L6 C) deflected an attempt at goal and just like that we were back in the game. Straight after that we had another corner and just like before we had another goal. We were 2-1 up. Bromsgrove weren't done yet and put the pressure back on us, so we had to do some very intense defending for the last 5, with Arthur Bagshaw (L6 Ldr) and James Simpson-Dent (U6 Sc), putting their bodies on the line helping us to end the game 2-1. We were all very happy with our performance and we played well and got a great result from it.

The lesson learnt here is that Oundle is now a hockey school, and we are looking forward to Repton next week! They should be quaking in their astros.

Kind Regards, Ben
