Match Report
Oundle School 1st VII vs  Perse Tournament
On: Sunday, 13 Jan 2019
Venue: Away

On Sunday 14th January, the 1VII Netball team played a Preseason Tournament at the Perse and after a good win against Repton the day before, the team was in good spirits for the day. Over the course of the day we played 9 matches, won 6, drew 1 and lost 2. We were very lucky with the weather, with both wind and rain waiting until the tournament finished. We started on a winning streak with four consecutive wins against Kimbolton, St George’s, Ipswich and Framlingham. Our first match was against Kimbolton, who we beat 15-2, due to great shooting from Honor Starling (Sn) and some great interceptions from Hannah Wakeford in defence. This 15-2 win put us in great stead for the next match against St George’s, a very challenging game, reflected in the final score 7-5 . Stella Simpson performed some great turnovers allowing the ball to travel up the court through the safe hands of Phoebe Gammell (K) and Cordelia Barlow (Sn) resulting in some great finishes by our shooters. Our next game against Ipswich was a great opportunity to try out some new combinations within the team, with new players Catherine Swanston (Sn) , Cari Austen (Lx) , Emily Horrocks-Taylor (LX) and Mia Stanton (D) playing extremely well and contributing to our 16-6 win. We then faced another tough game against Framlingham where we were beginning to tire after our consecutive matches. We managed to pull off another win of 9-7. Unfortunately, our next match was against our rivals Uppingham whom we lost to 8-7, this close loss will be interesting for when we play them later on in the season. The team really pushed through and persevered throughout the match, with some great feeds from Phoebe Gammell into the circle. There were, of course, some avoidable errors in this match but this only gives us something to work on later on in the season. We drew our next match against RHS and then we regained our focus and went on to beat Culford by a comfortable 19-2. After another win against the Perse, with some great movement between our shooters and good defence from Cordelia we went into our match against Oakham with confidence. Unfortunately at this stage, the team had begun to tire and with our energy quite low after a long and intense day, we lost to Oakham 11-4. We are very much looking forward to playing Oakham with fresh legs this weekend. This tournament proved invaluable for our team as it really highlighted some things we need to work on before the regional tournament and it was really good to be able to have some tournament experience with our new team.

Most Valuable Player was awarded to Phoebe Ashby (LX)
