Oundle 72 - 12 Oakham

Razor-sharp Oundle fell Oaks

Another Saturday, another unfamiliar venue for the U15B 'Wanderers': this time their own back garden - the Oundle 'barn' pitch for their one and only home match of the year.

Despite the obvious advantages of longer warm-up times and no stomach-churning coach journey along rural 'A' roads as preparation, Oundle began the match in a dozy fashion, turning over possession in the first minute which allowed the visiting winger an unopposed run-in from the halfway line.

Suitably chastened, Oundle metaphorically woke up and ran in four unanswered tries. Oakham were by no means a push-over and competed manfully at the breakdown, drove hard around the fringes and put in some bone-crunching tackles. However they could not handle Oundle's speed of thought and movement, especially on turnover ball.

Halfway through the first half, the visitors responded with a second try from a tap penalty to reduce the arrears to 20-12, but that was as good as it would get for the Rutland lads. Despite spirited resistance Oundle ran in a dozen tries in total, many of them from their own half. The always-impressive Noah Cooper barrelled over for a hat-trick, as did hard-running centre Alex Kapadia. Yasawal Naveed bagged a brace, further justifying his recent elevation from the 'C' team, and super-sub Tom Aubury ran in two from full-back. Fly-half Cosmo Fraser also scored, as did replacement flanker Harry Gadsby, with a quick-thinking tap-penalty from close-range. Scrum-half Ben Granville kicked six conversions.

Sadly the U15Bs will have no game for another three weeks due to the inter-house tournament, then exeat, however many have surely played their way into contention for the A team's upcoming national plate fixture. The remainder have earned their rest and should be confident of two victories in their remaining fixtures at Rugby and Radley.
